Eileen Hewson FRGS

It is with great sadness that we announce that Eileen Hewson FRGS passed away at 9:30am on Saturday 19th September after a courageous battle with cancer.

Eileen Hewson FRGS travelled to the remote areas of the Himalaya for over 40 years.

Her travels took her to Everest and Nepal, along the Karakorum Highway between Pakistan & China, Bhutan, Pakistan, Sikkim, Darjeeling, Kashmir, Ladakh & Zanskar, the Kingdom of Mustang Nepal and many others.

For many years Eileen’s concern for with the fate of old graveyards in Ireland and Asia inspired her to document many of the inscriptions. Her searches took her to India, the Himalayas and Sri Lanka (Ceylon) where she surveyed many European burial grounds. Finding an Irish heritage in the Falklands was a surprise so it was recorded before it disappeared.

The results are published in The Kabristan Archives and are available to the general public at a nominal price. Her blog, Genealogy Sri Lanka, allows the public to post their Sri Lankan Genealogy queries for free.

Eileen is the author of over 100 publications and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

Her final book ‘A Tibetan Dream – Travels in Ladakh, Bhutan and Mustang’ is due to be published soon.

Read more about Eileen's travels and adventures on her Himalayan Miscellany website.

Welcome to The Kabristan Archives

Church Ruin, IrelandTHE KABRISTAN ARCHIVES is an organisation dedicated to preserving memorial inscriptions from graveyards in Ireland, the Indian sub-continent, Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) and Jamaica, including many which no longer exist. They are presented here in a form which is easily accessible to the family historian. SEARCH or browse through THE KABRISTAN ARCHIVES for your relatives, find the inscription and we will supply a copy for £4 inc. postage worldwide. Maybe you are seeking more than just a memorial inscription then return to the past with THE KABRISTAN PUBLICATIONS and possibly we have the lives of your forbears on record. But remember all good stories may have a hint of embroidery and occasionally a minor error so we hope that you will forgive us if this happens. We are only as good as our sources. Send us an email if you're stuck and we will help you if we can. Finally read ABOUT US and share our journeys in search of your relatives and friends. You may be surprised at what you find, because dead men do tell tales.

'The wind whispers through the trees,
Recalling words and dreams
And memories of those who left us
Long ago.'
